다. The Destiny of Nations라는 작품은 Charles Lamb의 비평을 받고서 Coleridge는 다음과 같이 말하면서 완성치 않은 실패작이었다. 이 Old Navigator가 저주를 받고 바다를 떠돌아 다니게 하려면 Old Navigator가 어떤 죄를 져야 사건의 앞뒤가 맞겠다고 생각이 미치자, Wordsworth는 다음과 같은 제안을 Coleridge에게 했다.
Suppose you represent him(the Old Navigator) as having killed one of these birds on entering the south Sea and that the tutelary Spirit of these regions take upon them to avenge the crime.

1. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner를 쓰게 된 동기
Wordsworth와 Coleridge 두 사람이 초자연적인 Ballad 풍의 시를 써보자고 의논하던 차, 바다를 영원히 떠돌아 다니도록 저주받았고 두 유령이 주사위 놀이로 자기 영혼을 차지하려는 어떤 선원의 이야기를 시화(詩化)하기로 했다.
Coleridge는 이미 자신의 시 The Destiny of Nations와 Crantz의 History of Greenland에서 이 시에 도입할 빙산, 안개, 그리고 albatross의 소재를 생각하고 있었다. 이것은 두 사람이 Falkenberg 전설에서 착상한 것이었는데, 창작 과정에서는 이 선원을 The Ancient Mariner라고 하지 않고 Old Navigator라고 불렀다.
